Proctorio Secure Companion App
Overview
The Proctorio Secure Companion App is a free desktop application for Windows and Mac that works alongside the Proctorio Secure Exam Proctor Extension to provide enhanced exam security. Both the extension and the app must be installed and active when advanced security settings are enabled. The app is only required when one or more advanced security settings have been enabled by the exam administrator. When required, Proctorio will prompt you to install and launch the app after you start your exam.
The app conforms to Proctorio's Privacy Policy and does not collect or transmit personal data, view or access your files and folders, or permanently modify system settings.
Download the App
You can install the Secure Companion App before exam day using the links below. If the app is not installed when you launch your exam, you will be prompted to install it from the Before You Begin page.
App store installation is recommended, as these sources support automatic updates.

Launching the App
If the Secure Companion App is required for an exam, test-takers will complete the Advanced Security pre-check at the start of the assessment to confirm the app is installed and up to date.
Test-takers should select Launch on the pre-check page, or open the app store to install the app if needed.
Once the app is opened and connected to the exam, return to the Advanced Security pre-check page and select Close Programs or Ready to continue. In some cases, test-takers may be asked to update their app or close specific programs before continuing.

Manual Installation
If you are unable to install the app through the app store, use the direct download links provided in the instructions below.
macOS
Open the Mac Download link, then open the downloaded Secure Companion App.pkg file from your browser downloads or locate it in your Downloads folder using Finder and double-click to open it.
Follow the on-screen installation instructions. You may be asked to enter your device username and password.
Once installation is complete, you can move the installer file to the Bin.
Launch the app and return to the Advanced Security pre-check page and select Close Programs or Ready to continue.
Windows
Open the Windows Download link, then open the downloaded Secure Companion App.msix file from your browser downloads or locate it in your Downloads folder using File Explorer and double-click to open it.
Follow the on-screen installation instructions.
Launch the app and return to the Advanced Security pre-check page and select Close Programs or Ready to continue.
System Requirements
The Secure Companion App supports Chrome and Edge browsers on Windows and Mac devices. Supported operating systems are listed below. For a full list of hardware requirements, see Exam and System Requirements.

Troubleshooting
The following steps address common issues when installing or launching the Secure Companion App. For issues not covered below, see Companion App Troubleshooting.
I don't have access to the app store or cannot install the app. If your device is managed by your institution and app store access is restricted, use the direct download links in the Manual Installation section. If you are still unable to install the app, contact your institution's IT team for assistance.
The app won't open or is not connecting.
- Check that your device meets the minimum system requirements. See Exam and System Requirements.
- Check for available browser and operating system updates. See Checking for Updates.
- Restart your device and try again.
If the issue persists, start a chat with Proctorio Support.
The app is asking me to close programs I can't find or close. Some background processes cannot be closed through normal means and may require additional steps. See Companion App Troubleshooting for guidance on closing programs using Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (macOS).
