Proctorio Secure Exam Proctor Extension

Overview

The Proctorio Secure Exam Proctor extension is required for all test-takers and exam administrators using a desktop or laptop device. It must be installed in a supported browser before you can take, create, or review a Proctorio-enabled exam.

Supported Browsers

The Secure Exam Proctor extension supports Chromium-based (Chrome-based) browsers only. If you do not already have a supported browser installed, download one of the following:

• Google Chrome
• Microsoft Edge
• Brave
• Opera

Adding the Extension

All test-takers and exam administrators must install the Secure Exam Proctor extension before accessing a Proctorio-enabled exam.

To add the extension:

1. Open a supported browser and go to getproctorio.com.

2. Select Click here to install the extension.

3. Click Add to Chrome (or Get, depending on your browser).

4. Click Add Extension. A confirmation message will appear once the extension has been added successfully. (If you would like to understand what the extension is permitted to do, see Extension Permissions.)

5. Pin the extension to your browser toolbar: select Extensions, then click the pin icon to the right of Proctorio.

Extension Status Indicators

The Proctorio Shield icon in your browser toolbar changes color to reflect the current status of the extension. There is no need to manually turn the extension on or off. It activates automatically when you open a Proctorio-enabled exam in your learning management system (LMS) or assessment platform, and deactivates when you exit the exam or log out.

Badge	Color	Status
	Light Gray	The extension is inactive and not connected to Proctorio.
	Dark Gray	The extension is active and connected to Proctorio.
	Blue	You are in an active chat with a Proctorio Support agent.
	Green	You are in an active exam attempt and being monitored.
	Orange	Proctorio is experiencing connectivity issues, or the extension needs to be updated.
	Red	Proctorio has encountered an error, or the account has been temporarily restricted. Click the icon to view the error code, then contact Support for assistance.

Managing the Extension

Disabling or Removing the Extension

You may disable or remove the extension at any time, but note the following before doing so:

• Test-takers: The extension is required to take a Proctorio exam on a desktop or laptop device. Only disable or remove it after you have submitted your exam.

• Exam administrators: The extension is required to create, edit, and review Proctorio exams. To avoid access or configuration issues, keep the extension enabled while actively administering exams.

To disable or remove the extension:

1. Type chrome://extensions/ into the browser address bar and press Return. (Alternatively, select Extensions > Manage Extensions.)

2. Locate Secure Exam Proctor, then either toggle it off to disable it or click Remove to uninstall it.

Updating the Extension

By default, the Secure Exam Proctor extension checks for and installs available updates each time you restart your browser. To force an update, completely quit and relaunch your browser.

To manually update the extension:

1. Type chrome://extensions/ into the browser address bar and press Return. (Alternatively, select Extensions > Manage Extensions.)

2. Locate Secure Exam Proctor and click Remove, then confirm when prompted.

3. Go to getproctorio.com and follow the on-screen instructions.

4. Pin the extension to your toolbar: select Extensions, then click the pin icon to the right of Proctorio.

Updating Extension Settings

Two extension settings may be required before you can begin your exam: Incognito Access and site access. Both are configured from the extension's Details page.

To open the Details page:

Right click on the Secure Exam Proctor extension shield and select Manage Extension (Alternatively, type chrome://extensions/ into the browser address bar, locate the Secure Exam Proctor extension, and click Details).

Enabling Incognito Access

Some exams require Incognito access to be enabled on the Secure Exam Proctor extension. If this is required, the following message appears on the Before You Begin page: "The lockdown settings enabled for this exam requires you to enable incognito access, click here to fix."

Select click here in the message to open the extension settings and enable Incognito access.

Allow Access on All Sites

To avoid issues when starting your exam, confirm that the extension's site access is set to On all sites. In the Details page, locate Site access and select On all sites from the dropdown if it is not already selected.

Extension Permissions

When you install the Secure Exam Proctor extension, you may see a list of things it "can do" that looks extensive. In practice, its active capabilities are much more limited. Three things to keep in mind:

1. The extension cannot do anything without your permission. You must allow it to act.
2. It only requests the permissions needed for your exam. You can revoke them immediately after.
3. It is only active during an exam. It deactivates as soon as you exit or submit.

The following explains what each listed permission means in practice.

Troubleshooting

The extension is blocked by my admin.

If your institution blocks the installation of the Secure Exam Proctor extension, try switching to a different browser profile. If the issue persists, contact your organization's IT team.

1. Sign out of your school, work, or institution-provided browser profile.

   • Google Chrome: Sign out of Chrome
   • Microsoft Edge: Sign out of Microsoft Edge

2. Select or create a new profile.

   • Google Chrome: Use Chrome with multiple profiles

3. Go to getproctorio.com to add the extension to the new profile.

I'm no longer signed in.

Learning management systems and assessment platforms often log users out after a period of inactivity. If you see a "You're no longer signed in" message when opening the extension, log back in to your account to continue.
