Proctorio is an AI-powered online integrity platform that provides highly customizable exam proctoring and other tools to create secure online learning and assessment environments.
Proctorio uses AI to identify potentially suspicious behaviors, device activity, or testing conditions by analyzing exam data, recordings, and device information. All data and analytics are made available to the exam administrator, who is responsible for evaluating the information and deciding if any misconduct occurred.
The exam administrator or provider is responsible for deciding which recording, lockdown, and verification settings are enabled on the exam, as well as selecting which behaviors or activities are flagged as suspicious.
No. Proctorio aggregates, analyzes, and presents data—it is incapable of making a decision. It is the responsibility of the exam reviewer, or the administrating organization, to evaluate all exam data before deciding if any misconduct occurred.

Data Privacy and Security

No. Proctorio's encryption protocols prevent us from accessing or using user data to train our AI models. We ethically source all training data from volunteers and compensated individuals.
Proctorio only requests the permissions necessary to deliver your exam. Proctorio is active only during the proctoring session and does not monitor or collect any data after the session ends.
Institutions control who can access exam data and recordings. Proctorio uses zero-knowledge end-to-end encryption to protect all exam data, preventing Proctorio employees and unauthorized users from viewing it. If an institution requests technical support, they can grant temporary access to Proctorio staff for troubleshooting. This access is revoked once the issue is resolved.

You may be required to use one or more Proctorio applications to complete your exam; the required applications will depend on your device and exam settings. For laptop and desktop users, you must add the Proctorio Extension to a supported browser; you may also be required to download and install the Proctorio Companion app if your exam administrator has enabled one or more enhanced security settings on the exam. Mobile device users require only the Proctorio App.
If you are using a managed device provided by your institution or organization, you may not have sufficient permissions to add or remove extensions and applications. Please contact your exam administrator or IT Team for further assistance
Yes. You may remove all required Proctorio apps after completing your exam and reinstall them later as needed; however, if your device is managed by your institution, you may not have permission to add or remove apps.
The Proctorio extension shield will change color based on the status of your connection with Proctorio.
The Proctorio extension automatically checks for and installs updates each time you completely close and restart your browser. You can manually update the extension at any time by removing it and visiting getproctorio.com to reinstall it.
The Proctorio extension will automatically remove itself under certain conditions to prevent potential tampering. For example, opening the Developer Tools in your browser or modifying the extensions settings during an active exam will trigger Proctorio to uninstall itself.

Taking an Exam
This section covers everything test-takers need to know before and during a Proctorio exam, including system requirements, app installations, payment information, and how to confirm if an exam is proctored. It also addresses common issues like missing content, access codes, and prohibited services like VPNs.
Some institutions require test-takers to pay for their Proctorio exams. Please check with your exam administrator or provider; if a payment is required, you will be asked to provide your credit card information once you begin your exam.
At minimum, you will need a stable internet connection and a device not more than 10 years old: For laptop and desktop users, you will need to add the Secure Exam Proctor extension added to a supported browser; mobile device users must install the Proctorio App. You may also require a camera and microphone depending on your exam settings.
For Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace, and Moodle users, the title of a quiz or test will include one of two expressions: Remotely Proctored or Secure Browser. The exam instructions page will also indicate the exam is being proctored by Proctorio.
For all other assessment platforms, please review all provided instructions or check with your exam administrator.
The Proctorio Companion App download prompt indicates that the exam administrator has selected device-level security features for the exam.
Proctorio prohibits the use of certain services and applications to safeguard user data and maintain a secure and equitable assessment environment. This includes unsecure VPNs and proxies that attempt to decrypt data in transit. Proctorio does not block all VPNs or proxies, only those that compromise data security.
Test-takers should not be required to enter an access code or password unless explicitly instructed by the exam administrator. If prompted for credentials without prior instruction, follow the troubleshooting steps in the article below.
