Responsible AI Is About Governance, Not Just Technology

Most software companies now include AI in their products. As a result, the conversation is changing. Instead of asking "Does this product use AI?", customers are increasingly asking "How is that AI managed?"

That's an important distinction.

Building AI is one challenge. Governing it responsibly over time is another.

At Proctorio, we believe governance will become one of the defining ways organizations evaluate AI vendors. That's why we've invested in ISO/IEC 42001, the world's first international standard for AI management systems.

The Hard Part Isn't Building AI

Developing an AI capability is only the first step. The real work begins after it's deployed.

AI models evolve. New risks emerge. Regulations change. Customer expectations continue to rise.

Responsible AI requires an ongoing management system that defines accountability, monitors performance, evaluates risks, and continually improves how AI is used across the organization.

That's exactly what ISO/IEC 42001 was created to address.

What AI Governance Looks Like at Proctorio

For us, responsible AI isn't a statement, it's an operational process.

As part of our ISO/IEC 42001 certification, we've implemented more than 25 documented AI governance policies that guide how AI is developed, monitored, and maintained.

Those policies are supported by ongoing practices, including:

  • Regular fairness and bias assessments to help ensure our AI systems treat users consistently.
  • Regular leadership reviews of AI risks, governance activities, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Evaluating the AI governance practices of the third-party vendors we rely on, because responsible AI extends beyond our own products.

These aren't annual exercises. They're part of a continuous management process because AI itself is constantly changing.

Why This Matters

Organizations evaluating AI shouldn't only compare features. They should also understand how those features are governed.

An AI model is only one part of the equation. The policies, oversight, risk management, and accountability behind it are what determine whether it can be trusted over time.

That's what independent standards like ISO/IEC 42001 help validate.

Questions Every Organization Should Ask

Whether you're evaluating assessment software, HR platforms, financial applications, healthcare systems, or productivity tools, ask your vendors about AI governance, not just AI capabilities.

Some good questions include:

  • Do you have a formal AI management system?
  • Has it been independently audited?
  • How do you assess fairness and bias?
  • Who is responsible for AI oversight?
  • How often do you review and update your AI governance practices?
  • How do you evaluate the AI governance of your own vendors?

These questions matter because AI governance isn't static.

It's a moving target.

Technology advances quickly. Regulations continue to evolve. New risks emerge. Organizations should expect their vendors to evolve with them.

At Proctorio, we believe responsible AI requires continuous oversight, measurable processes, and independent validation, not just good intentions.

Today, customers ask vendors whether they are ISO 27001 certified to understand how they manage security. We believe AI governance is heading in the same direction.

Soon, organizations won't just ask whether a product uses AI.

They'll ask how well that AI is governed.
